Character Education in Scotland wins over pupils and teachers

What did you learn at school? Did you learn about yourself? Did you emerge with a clear idea of your values and what you hoped to achieve in the world? Too few school pupils do, according to those behind a new charity which launched with a low key event at the Scottish Parliament earlier this week. Character Education Scotland aims to work with schools, public and voluntary organisations and the business community to develop values-based education and training. It is a charitable spin-off from Learning for Life, a UK wide scheme working with schools to promote personal development, including the popular values poster programme, which pupils complete over weeks, identifying role models and inspirational figures and filling in spaces setting out their beliefs and ambitions for the future. The charity’s Chief Executive is former teacher, lecturer and editor David Lorimer, who set up the values poster award scheme – pupils can gain certificates for the best completed posters.
